Products from the Temperate Rainforest – Charcoal Burn and Woodland walk
- Join Cumbria Woodlands on October 31st for an opportunity to learn about products from temperate rainforests with the Coppice Coop.
As part of our Cumbrian Rainforest Project, we have arranged a day with the Coppice Coop to look at what woodland products can be sourced from a temperate rainforest. The day will be run by Angus Walsh (Cumbria Woodlands) and James Benson (Coppice Co-op) and will start with a demonstration charcoal burn, beginning at 9am. There will be the opportunity to find out more about what products are derived from the Cumbria rainforest. Once the kiln is lit, there will be time for lunch, followed by a walk in the neighbouring woodland, led by experienced foresters from the Coppice Co-op.
When? 31st Oct, 09:00-15:00
Where? The Coppice Co-ops Yard (The Depot, Slack Head, Milnthorpe LA7 7BA)

REMINDER – Stott Park Bobbin Mill Tour
Just a reminder to get your tickets for this which is THIS Wednesday if you haven’t already….
On Wed, 16 Oct 2024 17:00 – 18:30 BST, we will be having a Stott Park Bobbin Mill Tour and Chunky Veggie Soup.
This is a special event open to all members, and may be of particular interest to those who would like to supply bobbin wood to The Mill in future. We will cover the process for delivery, payment, timber specifications etc. It will be a nice social event with a useful purpose. If you don’t know Stott Park Mill, it is a fascinating place, deeply connected with woodland management over hundreds of years, having provided millions of bobbins for the Lancashire cotton industry from local coppice rotations.
After the tour, warm up with a bowl of Helen’s Chunky Veggie Soup.
*** UPDATE***: If for some reason the above wasn’t enough to tempt you, I believe Tony is now making some sourdough to go with it. Get in there!!!
Please reserve your place here so Helen knows how much soup to make. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/canw-bobbin-mill-tour-talk-and-chunky-veggie-soup-tickets-1031489391537?aff=oddtdtcreator
A bit of history
We’ve recently been given some photographic slides of a charcoal earthburn by Jack Allonby in Grizedale Forest in 1973. This burn was also filmed, and Brian Crawley has miraculously located a copy on Vimeo so we can all watch it. Here it is: https://vimeo.com/400658539 . Absolute treasure!
We are hoping to do an earthburn next year, to which you’ll all be invited. We’ll also need volunteers. Watch this space!
CANW Newsletter
We’ve asked Emma to do us another fabulous CANW Newsletter. Please could you have a think if there is anything you are up to that other members might find interesting. If you could drop Emma a line with any content ideas the entire membership will thank you for it. [email protected]
Or, alternatively, if you can think of something interesting that someone else is doing that you feel they ought to share then please pass on their details so we can establish communication!!!
